From the Pastor's Desk...

LITURGY

Our Sanctuary Lamp (the red candle burning to symbolize the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist) burns in our church in memory of Catherine Decker (requested by Jimmie & LaVerne Dykes) and in St. Ann Chapel for the deceased members of the Saber & Brown families (requested by Rita Brown).

  Bread & Wine this weekend are given in thanksgiving for the particular graces God has granted to us and our community through St. Polycarp Parish.

  Flowers Honoring Our Lord at the Altar are given by Mr. & Mrs. Bill Pajerowski, in loving remembrance of their son, Bill.  May our Lord loving embrace him.

Altar Servers Appreciation Day with Bishop Saltarelli, Oct. 3, 3 PM, at St. John the Beloved on Milltown Rd.   Report to the hall by 2:15 PM and dress nicely (not in robes) with NO sneakers or jeans, please.  Servers will process in to Mass together and sit in a reserved section. During refreshments afterward, each server will receive a memento from the Bishop and have an opportunity to pose for pictures.  We need to know by Friday if you are attending, so we can call in the number to the Vocations Office.  Call Deacon Charlie at 653-8279. 

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

PSR Begins Today!  We welcome all our new students and welcome back those who are returning.  We appreciate parents & guardians who have the youngsters here on time, make sure they complete any homework, and, most importantly, participate in weekly Mass.

  PSR Registration for All New Families with children, Pre-School thru High School.  Please call Sister Ellen (653-4101) to schedule an appointment.  We look forward to meeting you.

PARISH & FAMILY LIFE

Our B.V.M. Sodality will hold a Bake Sale next weekend, Sept. 25-26, after all the Masses.

All donations will be greatly appreciated.

  The Senior Singles will meet on Sat., Sept 25 at the home of Rita Brown.  Contact Shirley at 653-1649 for more info.

  Important Advice from Erma Bombeck:  Never lend your car to anyone to whom you have given birth!

  Remember to Wish “Happy Yom Kippur!” to your Jewish friends and neighbors on Saturday.

Ancient Order of Hibernians representatives will be here Oct. 2-3 to sign up recruits to this Irish-American Fraternal Organization.  There will also be info about the Ladies’ Ancient Order of Hibernians, which is not an auxiliary of the men’s group.

  Pray for Our Deceased, especially Steve Zmijewski, whose funeral service Fr. Tom conducted on Tuesday, the Jesuit pioneers who planted the faith on Delmarva, the Josephite Fathers & Brothers who provided a home for us in their chapel for over half a century, and all our departed parishioners and benefactors.  Also remember our deceased diocesan clergy whose anniversaries are this week: Fr. Michael Jordan (Sat.).

  Our Ecumenical Food Pantry in Asbury UM Church depends on your gift of non-perishable food to care for the needy in Smyrna , Clayton, Townsend, Kenton & Leipsic.  There is a great need for canned meats & fruits. You may place donations in the baskets under the coat rack in the hallway between the church & hall. 

No 50-50 Winner on 9/12 (we drew #230).  Next week’s prize will be $79. 

Basket Bingo Today, Sunday, Sept. 19. Doors open at 12:30p.m.

Kitchen Clean-Up in Mother Drexel Hall following 8:30 AM Mass tomorrow will help us prepare for our annual health inspection by the State of Delaware .  We welcome all helpers! 

  We Need a Part Time Bookkeeper 20 hours per month in our office.  (Virginia Hoye will be returning to school.)  Flexible hours and a wonderful staff with whom to work.  Please send your resume to Bernadette Baker in our parish office or call 653-8279.
